BPM (Beam Position Monitor)

Libera Platform B

The Libera is a data acquisition and beam position processor system used for the BPM systems in different accelerators and transfer lines. It was developed by the slovenian company Instrumentation Technologies and was adapted and enhanced for FAIR applications as an in-kind contribution. It is a modular MicroTCA based system used in different configurations for the particular requirements of the BPM systems for different accelerators at GSI and FAIR.

Libera Platform B features

Each of our Liberas has some features which are common for each application:

  • 19“, 2U, 310mm depth
  • MTCA based (non standard)
  • COMe Controller Board
  • FTRN slot
  • Acts as FEC
  • Up to 4 BPM modules

Libera family tree

For GSI/FAIR beam diagnostics there are four types of applications:

  • Libera Hadron for Circular Machines
  • Libera Hadron for Circular Machines + Closed Orbit Feedback (COFB)
  • Libera Hadron for HEBT
  • Libera Single Pass H (SPH)

Libera family tree @GSI & FAIR

Another application for the Libera at GSI/FAIR is the Low Level RF (LLRF) controlling. It is under responsibilty of GSI's LRF department and not further treated in this article.

The usabilty of a Libera for a certain application depends from the hardware configuration and installed software. We have three types of hardware configurations:

  • Libera Hadron for ESR, HESR & HEBT
  • Libera Hadron + COFB for SIS18 & SIS100
  • Libera SPH for p-Linac

ESR-/ HESR-/ HEBT-Libera (Libera Hadron)

Inter Connection Board (ICB)
  • COM Express MSC C6B-7S
  • Intel Core i5-3610ME
  • 16GB DDR3-1600
  • GbE, USB 2.0, DVI-A
  • ARM BMC
  • FPGA

SIS18- /SIS100-Libera (Libera Hadron + COFB)

p-Linac-Libera (Libera SPH)

For the retrofit the Liberas are also now in use for GSI's SIS18 and ESR.
