FLUKA Simulations

In collaboration with Sanja Damjanovic from DGS/RP-department at CERN
we will address important issues of radiation protection and the
appropriate shielding of BD-components.

General tasks of this project are:

• verify, if planned sensors are applicable at given installation locations
• define and optimize radiation shields for optical diagnostic equipment
• check the concept of SIS100 niches to protect tunnel electronics
• estimate the particle flux at locations in SIS100 and HEBT to qualify foreseen beam-loss monitors
• sequential work on projects 1-3 is proposed to pin down radiation requirements for BD-equipment

• Goals:
  1. Estimate the particle flux/species at BIF locations
  2. Qualify different shielding scenarios (e.g. sandwich materials)
• FLUKA input files (geometry) and preliminary simulations available
• Simulation results will be compared to GSI-HEBT data
• Important input for final beam diagnostic layout / selection of detector setup

• Goals:
  1. Generate FLUKA input for SIS100 tunnel
  2. Estimate the particle flux/species at electronic niches
  3. Qualify foreseen radiation shields of niches and electronic devices
• Geometry of niches and SIS100 tunnel (building, accelerator equipment) will be provided
• Comparison of simulation results with CERN limit of 200 kGy/yr
• Optimization of shielding concept, cable trays, air cooling etc.

• Goals:
  1. Generate FLUKA input for primary loss locations in SIS100 tunnel and HEBT
  2. Estimate the particle flux/species (secondary beams, particle showers)
  3. Qualify BLM detector types for age at given locations
• Geometry of SIS100 tunnel, beam lines, magnets, shieldings will be provided
• Calculate particle species, flux, energy deposition for different operational scenarios
• Estimate detector response of scintillators/ionization chambers/SEMs
• Compare results with CERN data for LHC-BLMs
